Viniyoga is practice that is tailored to meet your needs based on your level of ability, general health, and specific goals. Literally translated it means "adaptation, and proper application". What makes Viniyoga unique? The Breath- The first thing you will notice as you begin a session is that there is a lot of direction about how to use your breath. You will be guided in ways to use your breath that will help you do the poses with greater ease, as well as learning different breathing techniques to help you maintain a state of calm. Repetition and Stay- The second thing you will notice is that there is a use of repetition and stay in the poses. Moving into and out of a pose serves several purposes. It gently warms and prepares your body to stay in a pose, increases circulation to your muscles, and helps you develop more functional movement patterns. Staying in a pose allows you to access a deeper stretch, and will also deepen the effects of the pose. Personalized- The third thing you will notice is a lot of adaptation and variation of poses. This allows poses to be adapted to serve your needs, and keeps your practice feeling fresh. No two people are the same, and there are as many variations of a pose as there are people practicing it. The focus is not on performing a pose in a specific way, but discovering how the poses can best serve you. What is your focus? Therapeutic- Viniyoga is very gentle and is often used as therapy. Goals could include releasing contracted muscles that contribute to chronic pain, strengthening weak muscles, stabilizing joints, and balancing the nervous system for emotional stability and a deeper calm. You will be encouraged to work in a comfortable capacity, putting your comfort and safety first. Developmental- Developing a strong, balanced body is a primary goal in Viniyoga. There is a capacity to offer a very strong and challenging practice if that is your desire. You will find that even the simplest of practices will build strength in your body, and that strong practices can be gentle. Depending on your level of ability, the practice can be adapted to serve your needs. Spiritual- For those that wish to dive deeper into a spiritual practice, Viniyoga offers various tools that will help balance all levels of your being, physical, energetic, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. This allows you to create a deeper connection with what is true for you. Viniyoga encourages you to make yoga your own by finding what works for you. Developing a personalized home practice is an optional but integral part of the Viniyoga philosophy. As you work with yoga, you will gain a new awareness and understanding that will help you build better health and well being in your daily life. “Just as the activities of mind influence the breath, so does the breath influence our state of mind.” ~TKV Desikachar |
